Blue breezes past Red in FCA volleyball

WACO — The volleyball portion of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Super Centex Victory Bowl was less about volleyball than it was the experience of being part of teams involved in a mission beyond themselves. “It was a life-changing experience,” Cameron Yoe’s Savannah Kruse said after Saturday afternoon’s match at University High School. “This has brought a whole new mindset in my life. I met some really great girls and some real people of Christ.” Nevertheless, there was volleyball to be played and Kruse, Academy’s Hannah Mauldin and Jarrell’s Julie Tucker were part of the Blue team that had little trouble sweeping the Red team 25-12, 25-14, 25-15 in the fourth annual volleyball match for outgoing seniors capping their high school careers. The Red squad couldn’t match the power of the Blue, led by Hewitt Midway’s Allye Beth Deaton, a TCU signee who took MVP honors with 14 kills, two blocks and eight digs. Kruse, a Texas Lutheran commitment, chipped in two kills and four blocks. “There were some great girls and it didn’t matter who was a (Division I) player,” Kruse said. “We became tight and there was so much talent.” Kruse, Mauldin and Tucker were foes in District 20-3A but came together as teammates and friends for the ministerial opportunities during the week and Saturday’s match. The camaraderie impressed Academy coach Elena Queen, who served as an assistant for the Blue team. “Of the 11 players we had, maybe three are not going to be playing in college,” Queen said. “But you talk about humility. It was great to see these girls come together. Julie, Savannah and Hannah are three different players from three different schools who got along great. It was a great experience just to be part of it.” Tucker, who is set to play for Eastern New Mexico of the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference, provided four kills and five digs, and she was awed at the week the athletes put in.

“The first 48 hours were nerve-wracking with all the new people,” she said. “When we were doing community service projects, it felt like the place we should be. It was so fun and encouraging.” The Red team featured Central Texas Christian’s Sydney Schirner, Gatesville’s Kate Lovejoy, Moody’s Taliyah Stewart and the Copperas Cove pair of Madison Wasiak and Chyanne Chapman. Stewart had three blocks, and Lovejoy had a kill and four digs. Blue took command of the opening set with Corsicana’s Caroline Blitz and Teague’s Katherine Higgins going on a run of kills to close out the set. The second set was much the same, including a stretch of seven straight points on the service of Lorena’s Madelynn Miller, with Deaton providing four kills and Miller an ace in a run that gave Blue a 20-7 lead. The third set was the most competitive before Blue took charge behind Deaton midway through the game. “It was a really awesome experience,” said Mauldin, who will attend Tarleton State in the fall. “I’m glad I got the opportunity to play in this game and win and make some new friends. We all got closer to each other.”

Everyone wins in 9th annual Victory Bowl football game
          By JOHN WERNER jwerner@wacotrib.com

The Victory Bowl certainly wasn’t short on last-minute thrills. Both the Red and Blue teams scored heart stopping touchdowns in the final two minutes as the game ended in a 24-24 tie Saturday night at WISD Stadium. “Whatever the admission was everybody needs to give back a dollar or two,” said Blue team coach Keith Willis. “I think this game ended like it was supposed to. The Red team has nine lives.” The Blue team grabbed a 24-17 lead when Kerens’ C.J. Bivins intercepted a pass by McGregor’s C.J. McLeain and returned it for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:36 remaining. But there were more fireworks left by the Red squad. Facing fourth-and-19, McLeain scrambled and heaved a long pass downfield that Reicher’s Clayton Keahy caught for a 77-yard touchdown to tie the game at 24-24. McLeain wanted to make up for the interception, and delivered his biggest play of the night.
“I was mad at myself and I wanted to make it up to my team,” McLeain said. “I saw a guy from their team coming at me and then I heard Alex Parsons yell ‘Chunk it!’ Then I heard everybody going crazy.” Bivins was named the defensive most valuable player while Hillsboro’s Kamion Bell was named offensive MVP as he rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. The Red team nearly ran into a disaster on its first possession as Wortham’s Zach Jones fumbled on the first play for a six-yard loss and the Blue team recovered at the 19. But the Blue team couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity as Groesbeck’s Mitchell Waller missed a fourth-and-six pass. Bell then made his first big play of the night as he blew through a hole on the left side and exploded into the clear for an 85-yard touchdown to give the Red team a 7-0 lead with 10:12 left in the first quarter. McGregor’s Alex Parsons kept the Blue team from producing much offense early in the game as he made three tackles for losses of 24 yards on the next two possessions. Parsons sacked Waller twice for losses of five yards and nailed Nick Ward for a 14-yard loss. Facing third-and-29, Waller hit Lorena’s Jacob Spivey for a 23-yard gain before hitting Midway’s D’Unte Brown for seven yards for a first down at the Red 30. The Blue team couldn’t get another first down on the drive but Lorena’s Cole Baker nailed a 40-yard field goal to cut the Red team’s lead to 7-3 with 38 seconds left in the first quarter. On the third play of the second quarter, Baker hit Spivey on a short pass near the left sideline. Spivey found a gap in the defense and sped for a 70-yard touchdown to give the Blue team a 10-7 lead with 10:22 left in the second quarter. The Red team got a break when it recovered a fumble at the Blue team’s 48. Bell did most of the damage on the drive as he ran 14 yards for a first down before getting another first down on a 3-yard run to the 10. Two plays later, Bell powered around the left side to give the Red team a 14-10 edge with 4:47 left in the second quarter. The Red team threatened again after taking the ball with three minutes left in the second quarter. McLeain ran for 27 yards and then hit Riesel’s Jase Little for 11 to the Blue team’s 26. But on fourthand-two at the 18, Killeen’s Jamaal King sacked McLeain for a two-yard loss with 32 seconds left in the first half. The Blue team scored in the first minute of the third quarter as Baker found University’s Mikquon Dever over the middle for a 54-yard touchdown to take a 17-14 lead. Gatesville’s Sam Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 34 yards to the Blue team’s 24. The Red team picked up a first down but stalled at the 8 before Grandview’s Joshua Nash hit a 25-yard field goal to tie the game at 17-17 with 11:54 left in the game. The Red team team had another chance to score when it moved to the Blue’s 22. But on fourth-andfive, Noah Jewell was stopped for a one-yard loss after catching a pass from McLeain with 8:08 remaining.

VICTORY BOWL BASEBALL: Knights P Mitchell, Ellison C Douglas help Red team win in rout
C.J. Berryman | Herald staff writer
BELTON — It looked as if Jacob Mitchell and Garet Douglas had been playing baseball together for many years. Both were highly influential in a 14-4 victory in eight innings for the Red team over the Blue team in the second annual Heart of Texas Fellowship of Christian Athletes Victory Bowl on Friday at Red Murff Field at Mary Hardin-Baylor. Mitchell, of Harker Heights, plated a run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first to put Red up 4-0, and he pitched a flawless inning in the bottom of the eighth while striking out two to end the game with Ellison’s Douglas catching. “It was awesome,” Mitchell said. “I got to pitch to Garet Douglas, our crosstown rival. Me and him actually got to room together, so we built a little bit of a bond this week and it was awesome to get to go throw to him. “He caught me great back there. He called the pitches and I hit my spots, so it worked.” Mitchell and Douglas formulated a game plan in the bullpen prior to the inning. “I’ve never caught him before, but it seemed like we were on the same page,” Douglas said. “We talked in the pen over there, and we just said, ‘We’re going to do this to this batter, this to this batter and this to this batter.’ It worked perfectly.” Douglas was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored, and while he expected to be nervous, the butterflies weren’t actually there when he took the field. “I just got out there and just had fun,” Douglas said. “I said, ‘Stats don’t matter tonight.’ So, I just went out there and played baseball.” After falling down 4-0 in the top of the first, Blue clawed back to within 4-3 after three innings of play. Waco University’s Jordan Perez scored on a single to right field by Academy’s Max Lopez in the home half of the first, Robinson’s Rhett Roznos scored on a passed ball in the second and Perez hit an RBI single to right to score Bosqueville’s Cason Bradberry in the third. But that was as close at Blue would get. Red scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, and they tacked on three runs apiece in the seventh and eighth to seal the win. Both teams had some hiccups in the field, as Blue committed nine errors and Red had three defensive miscues. Douglas pitched an inning in the sixth and surrendered a walk, but he stranded the runner while striking out the side. Mitchell thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience of the FCA Victory Bowl, which began Wednesday and included community service projects, bonding experiences and fellowship. “I got to meet some great new people,” Mitchell said. “All my teammates were a blast to be around, and I just got to go have fun. Hit a home run or strikeout, it was just the experience that mattered. “It wasn’t what you did in the game, it was just the overall experience of this week and this day that made it all worth it.” Gatesville’s Peyton Bates competed Friday for the Red team, and he was happy to play one more baseball game and forge new relationships.

BY EDWARD ISAACS | TELEGRAM STAFF BELTON — Academy graduates Gaby Hay and Destini Hulsey didn’t skip a beat. After helping the Lady Bees win their first softball state championship last week, the pitcher and catcher teamed up one last time Friday night for the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes Super Centex Victory Bowl all-star game. Appropriately, Hay and Hulsey ended their high school careers with another victory. Hay belted a two-run home run, Hulsey scored a run and had two RBIs, and the Blue team beat the Red 14-5 at Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Dee Dillon Field. Left-hander Hay started in the circle for the Blue squad and pitched three innings while allowing a run and striking out two, and Hulsey served as her catcher one last time. “We were just so comfortable, like we hadn’t stopped playing,” said Hay, who will continue her softball career at NCAA Division III College of New Rochelle in New York. “It was so awesome and fun. I’m glad we got to end it that way. We were pretty pumped to come do this. It was kind of sad to not have our other (Academy) seniors and other girls, but we just wanted to come out and keep working hard.” Hay’s two-run shot over the center-field wall in the bottom of the first gave Blue a 3-1 lead. Red tied it at 3-all in the top of the fourth thanks to runs from Moody’s Kali Chatham and Killeen Ellison’s Madison Livers, but a six-run bottom of the fourth put Blue ahead to stay. Hulsey reached on a three-base error in the fourth before scoring on a Hay double to center to make it 7-3. Hay touched home after Mildred’s Taylor White tripled. Right-hander Chatham relieved Whitney’s Rowlee Johnson in the fifth and quieted the Blue team’s bats by pitching a scoreless frame, but Red couldn’t produce enough offense in the final four innings to catch up. Hulsey drove in the final two runs for Blue with a single to left in the eighth. Jarrell’s Kennedy Cottle drew a walk for the Blue squad in the third but was picked off first by Troy catcher Isabel Nieto. “I had a lot of fun here,” said Cottle, who will play for Pratt Community College in Kansas. “It was cool because we did community service. We got to just relax, laugh and have fun. The game was just cool, too. It was really bittersweet ending my high school career like this.” Nieto had an RBI bunt hit for Red that drove in Belton’s Meredith Lusby in the sixth. Nieto went 1-for-3. “Getting to play with the best of the best in Central Texas was really cool,” Nieto said. “Getting to meet all these girls personally was amazing. I knew of them, but they are more awesome in person.” Chatham, who reached on a Hay throwing error, scored the first run of the contest in the top of the first when she came home on a Bailey Murphy groundout. Lusby was 1-for-3, Moody’s Beth Bounds had a walk for the Red team and Holland’s
Danielle Ramos walked for the Blue squad.
