Belton’s Robinson propels Blue squad to Victory Bowl volleyball win, 3-1
By BRIAN CROWNOVER bcrownover@wacortib.com
Led by Belton’s McKinzee Robinson, the second annual Super Centex Victory Bowl volleyball game was dominated by the Red team yet again, whisking its way past the Blue team in four sets, 25-15, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23.
It was hard to see the white number nine on the back of her jersey at times, as the red blur that was the Temple College-bound hard-hitter flew around the court with ease. Robinson stuffed the scorecard, posting 17 kills, seven digs and five blocks. She thinks she might have saved the best for last.
“I wasn’t expecting this at all,” Robinson said. “It’s crazy, because I’m not used to all this attention. But it’s a great honor. This was probably one of my best games.”
Hosted by the Heart of Texas Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the contest matched players from the TAPPS to 6A levels, as 21 schools from the Central Texas area were represented on the hard court Saturday. Far from an individual showcase, the FCA promoted the event as more of a fellowship, grouping together girls that otherwise would have never had the opportunity to meet.
“Not only my team but with the Blue team, we had a great connection. Everyone was close and I’m really glad I got to do it,” Robinson said.
But Red head coach Sandy Dickerson of West knows the effect it can have on coaches as well.
“For someone like me, who has been coaching for 30 years or so, it just gave me a new outlook on life,” Dickerson said. “These girls have been so inspiring and have bonded so well with each other. I really hope to follow these great young ladies as they go onto play college ball or have great careers. It’s been a blessing.”
A gritty Blue team had their chances to take it to a fifth set. Trailing two sets to one, the Blue squad actually led by as many six points in the fourth set, only to see their lead slip away late.
Though on the losing side, Blue coach Judy Nunn of Bosqueville was all smiles. It seems to be an experience the first-time Centex Bowl volleyball coach won’t soon forget.
“It’s been amazing because it gives me an opportunity to share my faith with these kids,” Nunn said. “This team bonded so well together. Playing in the game was great for everyone, but sometimes it’s more about getting these girls ready for the real world in their maturity and spirituality.”
Baylor commit Kelsey Slechta showed why she is headed to the Division I level, as the Midway graduate had 13 assists, 12 digs, two blocks and two kills. Kendall Johnson had nine kills, and twin sister Kourtney added eight digs for the Blue team.
Mikayla Blount led the Red team in assists with 22.

Blue team thwarts Red rally in annual Super Centex Victory Bowl, 21-20
By BRICE CHERRY bcherry@wacotrib.com
What can Brown do for you?
Well, when you’re Blue, he can make you happy.
Connally’s Kristian Brown made a myriad of plays all over the field, including coming up with a game-clinching onside kick recovery to propel the Blue team to a raucous 21-20 win over the Red in the seventh annual Super Centex Victory Bowl Saturday night at Waco ISD Stadium.
The game, which appeared bound for a Blue blowout early on, came down to the wire, and couldn’t have provided a much more scintillating finish.
“It did get (nerve-wracking). It felt like Friday nights,” Brown said. “My team was great, the coaches were great. We hung in there, fought to the end and came out with the victory.”
By the midpoint of the second quarter, the annual all-star showdown seemed as though it might be headed for a rare runaway. Blue busted out to a 21-0 lead, thanks in part to the playmaking ability of Brown at quarterback. The Connally graduate, a UT-Permian Basin signee, completed 4 of 7 passes for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns, in-route to being named the game’s Bob McQueen Offensive MVP. But he just as easily could have won awards for his defense or special teams play, as he came up with a key second-half interception as well as falling on that final onside kick.
“They kind of told me before the game they were going to throw me in wherever they needed me,” Brown said. “So I just waited for my time. They threw me out there at the end of the game, and I just went out there and played the best I could, was able to make a play for my team.”
Despite falling into a hole, the Red team didn’t disappear. Their quarterback DaVonn Hopkins-Phelps piloted a stirring comeback, despite the fact that Hopkins-Phelps primarily played fullback for Copperas Cove his senior season.
Just before the halftime break, Troy’s Jake Schmidt came up with a leaping interception for the Red squad, and Hopkins-Phelps directed the team’s first scoring drive of the game. They went 77 yards in just under two minutes, with the Cove standout connecting with Hillsboro’s Doyle Hughes on a sweet 39-yard hookup with just 31 seconds to play in the half.
That score cut the deficit to 21-7, and the Red storm was only starting to bubble. Mart’s De’Nerian Thomas gave the team a lift with his scrambling in the second half, and he took advantage of a highlight de-cleater of a block for one 14-yard first-down scramble. His big tackle at Mart, Jacob Burney, took out a pair of Blue defenders as Thomas cut back across the field, knocking one into the other and freeing up the big gain.
Red finally uncorked the big play it was looking for when Hopkins-Phelps found a wide-open Cole Brunett of Whitney streaking along the sideline. Brunett bamboozled the defense to get open and raced 42 yards to paydirt with 5:39 to play in the game, bringing Red to within 21-14 of Blue.
Still, Blue looked as though it would coast home with the win when Brown intercepted Hopkins-Phelps with 1:46 to play. However, Blue fumbled near its own end zone on the ensuing possession, setting the Red up for a chance at a tying score from the 1-yard line.
Red lined up in a goaline package and hammered Hopkins-Phelps into the teeth of the Blue defense on four straight plays. Three times the officials marked him shy of the end zone. On the fourth, however, they cleared the pile and signaled a Red touchdown, bringing the score to 21-20, Blue, with just 20 seconds left.
After a timeout, Red coach Kenneth Gilchrist and his staff opted to forgo a game-tying extra-point kick and go for the win. Cove’s Hopkins-Phelps dropped back and fired a pass to the left side of the end zone intended for Mart’s Thomas, but Connally standout Josh Terrell slid in front of the pass and knocked it away to keep his Blue team in front.
“We had the intense goal-line stand, and then they called it good,” Blue coach Joey McQueen of Florence said. “Then they go for two and throw it to their best receiver and Josh Terrell did a heck of a job knocking it down. I’m very proud of our kids.”
Chilton’s DeMarcus Simpson picked off a pair of passes in the game and earned the Bob McQueen Defensive MVP honor.
“I knew they were going to test me whenever I got beat on the deep ball (to Brunett),” Simpson said. “But I just stayed and kept my composure, and came back out and played as hard as I could. The team got the victory.”
The game allowed rivals to become teammates, with sometimes spectacular results. Blue scored its second touchdown early in the second quarter when Brown danced around and dodged defenders before hitting his district rival Draeshaun Hannah of Mexia with a screen pass. Hannah did the rest, outrunning the defense for a 49-yard TD.
“Going against him was crazy, so having him on my team finally was pretty fun,” Brown said. “I love the experience.”
The only downside of the game was a first-half fracas that briefly broke out following a hit along the sideline. But for the most part, the players embraced the FCA’s message of brotherhood.
“It’s been great,” McQueen said. “Thursday we went to the projects here in Waco, and just to see 50 little kids three and four years old, these big boys loving them and letting them wear their jerseys. Playing touch football. That’s what it’s about. You want to play the game and be competitive, but you want them to learn to care for other people.”
